After Prime Minister Narendra Modi led a procession and addressed a gathering after casting his vote in Ahmedabad on Tuesday, senior Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi said that his party has appealed to the Election Commission to take action for violating the model code of conduct and to bar him from campaigning for 48 to 72 hours.
The model code came into effect on March 10 following the announcement of the dates of the 2019 general election. The Congress leader said that Narendra Modi has been a habitual offender, as far as the model code was concerned and he should be penalised for that.
“We have appealed to the EC to bar him from campaigning for 48 to 72 hours,” he said.
While speaking to the gathering after casting his vote PM Modi had spoken of the power of the voter’s ID card and the need to cast one’s vote. He said that the voter’s ID card was much more powerful than an IED or improvised explosive device (used by militants). He also said that it was a noble and rewarding act to cast one’s vote. “As one feels pure after a holy dip during the Kumbh, I feel pure after casting my vote in the festival of democracy,” the PM was quoted saying. He also showed his inked finger to the people present at the polling booth after casting his vote.
Voting for the general election began on April 11 and will continue till May 19. Results will be declared on May 23.
