Centre asks states to inspect all child care homes of Missionaries of Charity

After Jharkhand police arrested a nun of the Missionaries of Charity’s Ranchi branch in connection with alleged child trafficking, the Union Ministry of Women and Child Development (WCD) instructed all the states to investigate all child care homes of Mother Teresa-founded organisation.

WCD minister Maneka Gandhi also set a deadline of one month to enquire whether all child care institutions were registered with the government’s Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARA), the country’s top adoption body.

On July 6 this year, a nun and a worker of the charity were arrested by Jharkhand police on the basis of the state’s Child Welfare Committee’s complaint, after the committee found a new born missing from the charity’s shelter in Ranchi. Later, Jharkhand police conducted a state-wise crackdown in the child care homes.
