Incidents involving clashes between political parties took place from the very beginning of the third phase of the 2019 general elections in West Bengal that began at 7 am on Tuesday, April 23.

This phase of the polls claimed its first victim in West Bengal on Tuesday. While one person – a Congress supporter – died in Bhagabangola of Murshidabad in poll related violence between supporters of the Congress and the Trinamool Congress, two persons – one of them from the ruling Trinamool Congress and the other from Congress – were also injured in the same incident. The deceased was identified as Tiarul Shiekh.

Congress supporters alleged that Trinamool men led the attack against them, which the Trinamool supporters denied. They said that the death was the outcome of an internal feud within the Congress.

Several minor incidents were also reported from various pockets from elsewhere in the state where elections were held today.
For the third phase, polls were held today in Balurghat, Malda Uttar, Malda Dakshin, Jangipur and Murshidabad seats. In Malda North, cousins Isha Khan Choudhury of Congress and MP Mausum Noor of Trinamool Congress are fighting against each other. Left and BJP candidates are also fighting from the same seat.

Mausam Noor, who had won the seat on a Congress ticket in 2014, joined the Trinamool Congress in January this year.
In the Malda Dakshin, veteran and sitting MP Abu Hasem Khan Choudhury, father of Isha Khan Choudhury, is the Congress candidate. The Left has not fielded a candidate here as they are supporting Khan Choudhury.

In Jangipur, Abhijit Mukherjee, son of former President of India Pranab Mukherjee, is looking for a hattrick. However, many feel he may not be able to pull it off this time.

Votes cast were 68.25 per cent in five parliamentary seats of West Bengal Till 4 pm.  Altogether 61 candidates are seeking votes from 80,23,846 voters here, and polls were held in 8,528 polling stations.
