Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Saturday afternoon were on their way to Hathras in Uttar Pradesh to meet the family of the 20-year-old woman who was gangraped and killed in September. There is nation-wide outrage as the state government locked up the family in their home and cremated the body of the woman in the middle of the night. The brutality by the administration has shocked people all over the country and beyond.
The Congress leaders were stopped on their way to the woman’s house on Thursday and were briefly detained. On Saturday, they set off for Hathras again. Congress leaders Adhir Chowdhury and KC Venugopal are also on their way to Hathras. The UP government had earlier insisted that large gatherings were not allowed as it would mean flouting COVID-19 guidelines, but later allowed the Congress leaders to travel to Hathras. Earlier today, the UP top brass including the DGP and chief secretary visited the home of the young woman and spoke to her family.
