Sitaram Yechury, Communist Party of India (Marxist) general secretary and D Raja, general secretary of the Communist Party of India were detained today by the police at Srinagar Airport as soon as they landed there today.
Yechury and Raja wanted to pay a visit to Yusuf Tarigami – CPI(M) lawmaker in the dissolved Jammu & Kashmir Assembly. Yesterday, Yechury had written to the J &K Governor Satya Pal Malik, informing him that he would be in Srinagar today in order to pay a visit to Tarigami. According to the CPIM general secretary, he had heard that Tarigami was not keeping well.
The CPIM has “an active unit in the state of Jammu & Kashmir,” he had mentioned in the letter, adding, “I hope the administration will not create any hurdles in discharging my responsibilities as a leader of my Party.”
Jammu & Kashmir has seen a total shutdown – and partial shutdown in some areas — following the abrogation of Article 370 on Monday. While Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured the nation in a television and radio address yesterday that Kashmir would soon get back to normal, the administration also wants to ensure that there is no disturbance created anywhere. Some restrictions are scheduled to be lifted today in view of the Friday namaaz, it has been reported.
The CPIM (@cpimspeak) tweeted, “@SitaramYechury has being detained at Srinagar Airport and not allowed to move anywhere. This despite the fact that he had informed the administration about his visit to meet CPIM MLA MY Tarigami who is not well & other party workers. We strongly protest this illegal detention.”
Yesterday, Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad – who had also been chief minister of Jammu & Kashmir in the past – was not allowed to leave the airport. He was sent back to Delhi after he had landed in Srinagar airport.
