SN Srivastava, the IPS officer who was appointed Delhi Police Special Commissioner (Law and Order) on Wednesday, was given the additional charge of Delhi police chief on Friday.
He will replace the current Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik, who retires on Saturday.
Srivastava was given the charge of Special Commissioner after he was brought in from the Central Reserve Police Force to end the Delhi violence that continued for days since Sunday. The violence which apparently started over the contentious Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) has resulted in 38 deaths so far with hundreds injured.
The current police commissioner Patnaik has been criticized for not doing enough to contain the violence that raged northeast Delhi for four days.
