Drinking water in India is highly contaminated with uranium, finds study

Drinking and irrigation water across 16 states in India is highly contaminated with uranium, which is way above than World Health Organisation’s (WHO) permissible limit of 30 micrograms of uranium per litre, a study of Duke University found.

The researchers took data of groundwater from 16 states along with new data from 324 wells in Rajasthan and Gujarat. The study shows human activities which cause groundwater depletion and nitrate pollution may also expose people to chronic kidney diseases.

Avner Vengosh, a professor of geochemistry and water quality at Duke’s Nicholas School of the Environment said that they found 26 districts in north-western India and nine districts in southern or south-eastern India exceeded the permissible level.
