Farmers march to Delhi demanding loan waiver, sugarcane dues and free electricity; stopped on the way

Thousands of farmers have begun a march to Delhi on Saturday from Uttar Pradesh with various demands that includes loan waiver, pending sugarcane dues and free electricity. They have a list of 16 demands altogether.

The march started on September 11 from Saharanpur of Uttar Pradesh and was scheduled to end it at Kisan Ghat in New Delhi. They were however, stopped at Ghazipur near National Highway 24, and a few representatives were taken to the Union Ministry of Agriculture to discuss their demands.

The march has been organised under the banner of Bharatiya Kisan Sangathan. The association decided to conduct the march after earlier attempts to hold talks with the Ministry had failed to materialise.

The farmers will demand waiver of their loans and to buy sugarcane from them at due prices. The Centre had waived the loans of a few farmers on an earlier occasion.

The protesters will also demand for free electricity for farmers. Recently, the Uttar Pradesh government has imposed steep tariff on power bills much to the discomfort of the locals. The protesters said that they will go on a hunger strike if their demands are not met.

The march has led to traffic congestion in parts of Noida and Meerut-Delhi Highway. Heavy security forces have been stationed along the route of the march.
