IPS officer from West Bengal, SMH Mirza was arrested on Thursday in connection with the Narada case by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). This is the first arrest in the Narada sting operation case.
In the videos recorded by journalist Mathew Samuel, individuals who looked like former Trinamool Congress leaders Sovon Chatterjee, Mukul Roy (both are now with the Bharatiya Janata Party), Firhad Hakim, Subrata Mukherjee, Sougata Roy, Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar and IPS officer SMH Mirza among others, were seen discussing receiving cash from a journalist who posed as a person with business interests in the state. It hit the headlines in March 2016 before the state Assembly elections.
A number of leaders who purportedly appeared in the video were called for voice tests by the central investigating agency.
Mirza was called for an interrogation on Thursday, and was arrested as he could not offer satisfactory answers to the investigators’ questions, according to the CBI claim. He was produced in court and has been sent to CBI custody till September 30. He was then taken to the CBI’s Nizam Palace office in Kolkata. The CBI investigators feel that if he is interrogated, links with others involved in the case can be found out.
