The city sky has been overcast since this morning, followed by heavy rains yesterday. Parts of the state received rainfall from time to time throughout the day along with thunderstorm. The sky may remain cloudy all through Thursday. Parts of south Bengal – especially Murshidabad and Birbhum – are likely to receive heavy rainfall today and tomorrow.
The Alipore weather office has said that it may rain on Thursday, adding that the sky will be clear from Friday. While monsoon has started retreating from parts of Northeast India but no definite predictions could be given about the exit of monsoon from Bengal.
Officials from the Alipore weather office said that a low pressure trough has formed between a circulation in Bangladesh and another in Odisha. But the low pressure circulation over Odisha won’t last long. Winds from Bay of Bengal have changed direction as the end of monsoon is nearing, cutting off the supply of moist air to the circulation in Odisha.
Additionally, cold and dry air from the land mass will weaken the circulation. The low pressure trough is expected to gradually move towards Bangladesh, which will improve the weather conditions.
