Historian Ramchandra Guha was detained in Bangalore today ahead of a protest march scheduled today against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). Guha told NDTV: “I have been detained for holding a photo of Mahatma Gandhi and speaking to the press.” He was detained along with other protestors.
Bengaluru police commissioner Bhaskar Rao was quoted saying that during protests that took placed without permission, there were instances of stone-throwing that led to the decision of not allowing it.
Several protests have been scheduled in various parts of the country today from ordinary citizens not under any political party’s banner. However, Section 144 has been imposed in Bangalore for three days. Permission for rally was also withheld in Delhi, and gathering of four or more people has been banned near Red Fort. Lucknow has also banned large gatherings.
