There will be no winter session of the Parliament this time due to the COVID-19 outbreak, various reports said today quoting the government officially. There will be a Budget session in January 2021.
While Parliamentary Affairs minister Pralhad Joshi said in a letter that all political parties were in favour of doing away with the session this time due to the pandemic, the Congress said that it had not been consulted in the matter. Joshi said in his letter that he had contacted floor leaders of various political parties who have expressed their concerns about the pandemic and wanted to avoid the Winter Session. “It would be appropriate to have the Budget Session, 2021 in January, keeping in mind the unprecedented circumstances created by Covid-19 pandemic.”
Congress reacted by saying that the party had not been consulted before arriving at the decision. In fact, several Congress leaders wanted a session urgently to discuss farmer protests, the economy and the situation with respect to China. The monsoon session had been cut short in September 2020 after several MPs contracted COVID-19.
