Former captain of the Indian cricket team, Saurav Ganguly, is all set to take over as president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). This is the first time in its 91-year-old history that a former captain will be the body’s president. Ganguly now heads the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB).
Earlier, Brijesh Patel was the choice for BCCI chief, but one of the most influential Union minister’s choice was Saurav Ganguly, and a number of moves followed to make it happen.
In fact, a proposal to be vice-president had been made to Ganguly, but he had turned it down. This was followed by some meetings in order to decide that the cricket star would get the top post.
Jay Shah, son of Union home minister Amit Shah and former Gujarat Cricket Association joint secretary, may be the BCCI secretary and Arun Dhumal, brother of Union minister Anurag Thakur may be the treasurer.
The formalisation of this choice will take place at the board’s annual general meeting on October 23. The nomination process ends on Monday, and it is learnt that Saurav Ganguly will file his nomination during the day. However, no election will take place since the candidates have been chosen with consensus.
Ganguly heading the influential body with the backing of the powerful Union minister and a powerful section of the Central government has a major significance in the politics of West Bengal as well, that is about to unfold in the coming days, sources said.
