Seven years after the brutal gangrape and killing of a 23-year-old medical student in Delhi, who came to be known as Nirbhaya, four of her rapists and killers were hanged in Delhi’s Tihar Jail early on Friday.
Pawan Gupta (25), Mukesh Singh (32), Akshay Thakur (31) and Vinay Sharma (26) – four convicts in the case – were hanged at 5.30 am, a few hours after the Supreme Court dismissed their final petition.
Their lawyer had also petitioned cited Novel Coronavirus as the reason for lack of adequate documents for the appeal filed urgently before the Delhi High Court.
Nirbhaya’s mother, Asha Devi, said that she along with many have waited for this day when the “beasts had been hanged”.
This is the first time four persons have been hanged together at the same time for the same crime anywhere in India, at least since Independence. The last hanging in Tihar took place in 2015.
Six persons were arrested and charged with rape and murder of a 23-year-old medical student in Delhi in 2012, which came to be known as the Nirbhaya case. One of the accused was a minor and was tried in the juvenile justice court. He was released after three years. Another accused – Ram Singh – had allegedly committed suicide in Tihar Jail.
