Amidst talks over using Aadhar data for solving criminal cases, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) on Friday clarified that no investigating agency is allowed to use the biometric data for crime investigation, it was reported.
In an official statement, the statutory authority of issuing Aadhar, took Section 29 of the Aadhaar Act, 2016 to mention that no one can use the Aadhar data except for generating Aadhar and authenticating the identity of the holder. The act can only be altered under Section 33 of the Aadhaar Act in cases it involves national security but it has to be approved by “an oversight committee headed by the Cabinet Secretary”. (URL)
UIDAI further said that the authority did not share any Aadhar data with any crime investigating agency. Even after the Mumbai High Court’s directive to pass data on to an investigating agency, UIDAI approached the apex court and a stay order was put on it.
Earlier, National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) Director Ish Kumar raised the issue of sharing Aadhar data with investigating agencies for better investigation.
