Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chauhan wants “cow protection” department

Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan wants the formation of a “cow protection” department – a Gau Mantralaya. The announcement was made in poll-bound Madhya Pradesh, where the model code of conduct will come into effect shortly.

At a public meeting in Khajuraho on Sunday, Chauhan said though the state had the Madhya Pradesh Gau Samvardhan Board, he wanted the formation of a full-fledged department in the state for the protection of cows. He was speaking at a programme organised to give awards to gaushalas.

The recommendation for a gau mantralaya had been made by Swami Akhileswharand Giri, chairman of the executive council of the board, who enjoys the status of a cabinet minister.

Chauhan said the board cannot have as much funds as an independent department, and thus it was limited in its scope of work. And therefore, a Gau Mantralaya would best help serving cows better. He suggested that citizens should also provide shelter to cows, adding that there can be a major difference if every house offers shelter to two to four cows.
