Tiger population in India increases by 33 per cent in four years, Sunderbans count rises too

India has become one of the “safest habitats” for tigers, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said today as he released the All India Tiger Estimation Report 2018. The tiger population in the country has increased from 2,226 in 2014 to 2,967 in 2018, which is an increase of 33 per cent.

The Prime Minister said that what was decided at St Petersburg – about doubling the target of tiger population – has been completed four years early. PM MOdi also said that “the story that started from ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ and reached to ‘Tiger Zinda Hai’ should not end here”, referring to the popular Salman Khan films.

July 29 is marked as International Tiger Day, to raise awareness on tiger conservation.

In the Sunderbans region, the tiger population has increased from 75 to 88 in four years.
