Trinamool accuses BJP of violation of model code, meets EC to lodge complaint

Leaders of Trinamool Congress called on officials of the Election Commission of India (ECI) to lodge a formal complaint against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for violating the Model Code of Conduct (MCC).
The code is implemented with the announcement of the election dates. Top leaders of the Trinamool Congress Derek O’Brien, Sukhendu Sekhar Ray and Chandan Mitra approached the ECI on Tuesday to draw its attention to the printing of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s picture on the tickets issued by the Indian Railways. Pointing out that it was in violation of the MCC, the Trinamool leaders urged the ECI to ensure that the pictures are removed from the tickets.
Earlier, senior BJP leaders including Ravi Shankar Prasad and JP Nadda had approached the ECI to urge the authorities to declare West Bengal as a ‘super-sensitive’, and expressed apprehensions that the Trinamool Congress will not allow free and fair election in the state.
Speaking to the media, Ravi Shankar Prasad had stated that ‘around 100 murders took place in West Bengal during the panchayat elections’. He further alleged that the ‘police there functions as the workers of Trinamool Congress’. The BJP had therefore even demanded the deployment of media observers for ‘vigil’ during the coming elections.
Responding to this, Derek O’Brien stated on Tuesday that the allegations were ‘baseless’. Adding that ‘West Bengal is a peaceful state’, he pointed out that ‘there is no such emergency situation to declare Bengal a super-sensitive state as demanded by the BJP’.
