Trinamool MP Mahua Moitra criticises Delhi meat shop ban
South Delhi Mayor Mukesh Suryan had said meat shops under his jurisdiction should be shut during Navratri.
Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra today criticised the ban on meat shops in various parts of Delhi for Navratri. She said that the Constitution allows her to eat meat whenever she likes and allows shopkeepers too the freedom to sell meat.
“I live in South Delhi. The Constitution allows me to eat meat when I like and the shopkeeper the freedom to run his trade. Full stop,” she wrote from her Twitter handle on Wednesday.
On Monday, South Delhi Mayor Mukesh Suryan had announced that meat shops under the jurisdiction of his civic body should be shut during the “auspicious period of Navratri devoted to Goddess Durga”. He also said that devotees avoid meat, onions and garlic during these nine days of Navratri. According to Suryan, the decision was take on the basis of complaints. No official order was issued however. Meat shop owners have kept the shops closed, fearing action from the civic body authorities.
