Trinamool MPs meet PM Modi, request West Bengal’s name change

Trinamool Congress MPs called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday with the demand for the change of the name “West Bengal”.
They demanded amendment in the Constitution to effect the name change. The MPs have demanded that the amendment be made in the current session of the Parliament itself.
Four years ago, the Legislative Assembly of West Bengal had passed the proposal of changing the name of the state to Bangla. The proposal was then sent to the Centre.
Recently, the Union minister of state for Home had informed in Parliament that the proposal to change the name of West Bengal could not be complied with as that would necessitate amendment in the Constitution. Following this, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her anguish and said that it was due to political reasons that the Centre did not allow the name change.

The state BJP had always opposed the name change. Governor of Meghalaya Tathagata Roy added a new dimension to this name change issue. Criticising the name change attempt he wrote on his Facebook account that it was he who had suggested to the then home minister Rajnath Singh that the name of West Bengal should not be changed.

On Wednesday, Trinamool MPs, including Derek O’Brien, Saugata Roy, Abhisekh Bandopadhyay and Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar called on the Prime Minister and requested him for Center’s approval in changing the name of the state. Later, they said that they hoped for a favorable response.
