The women inmates of Sabarmati Central Prison are now making sanitary napkins inside the jail premises to ensure menstrual hygiene among prisoners across Gujarat.
While the women involved in the work are getting paid, the sanitary napkins are being delivered to all women inmates in Gujarat prisons free of cost.
Sabarmati jail authorities and the Navjivan Trust – established by Mahatma Gandhi, an Ahmedabad-based non-governmental organisation – joined hands to install a sanitary napkin manufacturing unit in the women’s barrack of the Sabarmati jail and started production on May 11. Twelve women inmates can work at a time in the unit.
There are plans to involve the women into small businesses in sanitary napkin manufacturing even when they are released from jail.
