The body of a 36-foot whale washed ashore on the beach in Mandarmani of West Bengal’s East Midnapore district on Monday morning. Mandarmani, 150 km from Kolkata, is a popular tourist spot on the Bay of Bengal coast, currently without tourists though, due to Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19).
Local people spotted the body of the whale that had been washed ashore, and informed the administration. The state fisheries, forest department officials along with the district police and civil administration authorities reached the spot.
The whale lay covered in blood along with injury marks. The reasons for the injury marks has not been confirmed yet. Whales are endangered species under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
