7-year-old from Murshidabad found Omicron positive on Wednesday tests negative today

This is the first case of Omicron in Bengal

West Bengal had reported its first case of Omicron on Wednesday, as a seven-year-old boy tested positive for the variant of Coronavirus. Within a day, his report has come negative. The child is currently in isolation ward at a hospital in Murshidabad, and will be released as soon as there are instructions from the government. He may have to continue to remain isolated for sometime, officials said.

The child, a resident of Murshidabad, had come to Kolkata via Hyderabad from Abu Dhabi a few days ago with his parents. Both parents have tested negative. The state health department was informed that the child tested positive for Omicron.

The family recently visited relatives in Malda’s Kaliachak and thus contact tracing is being done. The child arrived in Hyderabad from Abu Dhabi, on December 11 at Hyderabad and then travelled to Kolkata the same day. His sample was sent for genome sequencing. It was found positive for Omicron variant and information came to Bengal from Hyderabad.
