Actor-turned Trinamool MLA Debashree Roy quits party, open to joining BJP

Actor-turned Trinamool MLA Debashree Roy quits party, open to joining BJP

Debashree Roy, Bengali film actor-turned Trinamool MLA who won twice from Raidighi constituency of South 24 Parganas quit the party on Monday. She is learnt to have sent her resignation letter to party general secretary Subrata Bakshi. The Trinamool’s response to this is not yet known.
Roy has not been nominated as Trinamool’s candidate this time. The entire candidates’ list for the party has been released already. Debashree Roy had first defeated CPI(M)’s senior leader Kanti Ganguly in 2011.

The actor-turned-politician said that she is upset about the fact that she was not offered bigger responsibilities by her party despite winning from a “difficult” seat. Right now, she said she wants to concentrate on films, though she is open to being welcomed in any role to “serve the people”. “I’ve been in politics for long, if someone calls me to serve the people, I will think over it,” she said.

Several Trinamool Congress leaders – including MLAs and MPs – have joined the BJP in recent times and have also been made candidates to contest in the coming Assembly polls. It is to be seen whether Roy is also going to join the BJP and contest the elections scheduled in eight phases from March 27 to April 29. Results are out on May 2.
