Gyanwant Singh to take charge of Mamata Banerjee’s security after Nandigram fiasco
Vivek Sahay, who was in charge, was transferred by the Election Commission.
After the Election Commission transferred director of security for Mamata Banerjee, Vivek Sahay, following the incident in Nandigram on March 10 in which she was left injured, IPS officer Gyanwant Singh was given charge on Monday to supervise her security.
A few hours after Mamata Banerjee had filed her nomination papers in Haldia on March 10, she had reached Nandigram of East Midnapore district from where she is contesting the elections. While interacting with people, the vehicle door she was in, was slammed on her foot, leaving her severely injured. Banerjee was rushed to Kolkata’s SSKM Hospital where she was admitted. She was discharged two days later.
The Trinamool Congress chief has now started holding rallies with a cast on her leg. The Election Commission had asked for reports from the state government and observers on the incident. While the Trinamool Congress alleged that it was a conspiracy and a deliberate attack on Banerjee, the EC has said that there is no such proof so far.
Director of security for Banerjee, Vivek Sahay, was transferred out, and in his place, Gyanwant Singh was brought in today.
