Heat wave condition prevails in south Bengal, Kolkata slightly cloudy with light rain predicted; some schools extend summer vacation
With no respite from heat wave in the southern part of Bengal including Kolkata, the education department in the state has decided to extend the summer vacation till June 30. The decision will be applicable to all state-run and state-sponsored schools in the state.
Education Minister Partha Chatterjee has reportedly requested private schools in the state to extend the vacation in order to give students relief from the unfavourable weather conditions.
The private schools in Bengal have so far had mixed responses. The Future Foundation School has extended the summer vacation by a few days. South Point School authorities informed that classes nursery to V would remain suspended from 20 June to 22 June and classes VI to XII will remain suspended on 20 June and 21 June due to the weather conditions. The break may be extended if the conditions do not improve, and decision would be taken in due course. La Martiniere School too discussed the matter internally and will take a decision. Classes are on in Loretto House, and the school authorities said they have not taken any decision to keep the school closed.
In Kolkata and other adjoining districts, the rising temperature and high relative humidity caused immense discomfort. Around noon however, the Indian Meteorological department (IMD) predicted that Kolkata will remain party clouded with a possibility of few spells of rain and thundershowers. IMD also predicts that the city may experience moderate rain within the next few days.
