Heavy to very heavy rain forecast for Kolkata in next 48 hours

With south-western monsoon showings its strength, south Kolkata including Kolkata and its surrounding districts will get heavy to very heavy rainfall in the next 48 hours.

Heavy to very heavy rain will also continue in north Bengal for the next five days with a cyclonic circulation making conditions favourable for the monsoon.

Meanwhile incessant rains since yesterday night inundated several areas of Kolkata including Camac Street, Chittaranjan Avenue, Muktaram Babu Street, Shilpara, Amherst Street and so on. Alipore recorded 98.81 mm rainfall from 12 midnight to five in the morning while Behala and Joka received 87.88mm and 77.47 rains respectively.

The regional meteorological department, Alipore issued an alert for coastal areas of Bengal and asked fishermen to stay away from the sea for the next two days.

Chief minister Mamata Banerjee cancelled her administrative meetings in East Midnapore’s Digha, so she is able to monitor the situation in the entire state from her office in Kolkata’s Nabanna. The state government has already alerted all district administration and disaster management teams and opened a 24-hour control room in the state administrative headquarters.
