West Bengal cabinet clears proposal for separate welfare boards for Matua and Namasudra communities

The Bengal government has decided to form two welfare boards for the Namasudra and Matua communities for their socio-economic welfare.

Chandrima Bhattacharya, the minister of state for Health and Family Welfare, said that the decision was taken at the cabinet meeting. “The decision to form welfare boards for the Matua and Namasudra communities was taken unanimously,” she said.

Earlier this month, the chief minister had met a delegation of All India Namasudra Vikash Parishad in Siliguri and had assured them that a welfare board would be formed for them.

Two other important decisions were taken in the cabinet meeting. A 41.11 acre land at Pirachandi and Piraboni mouzas in West Midnapore’s Salboni will be given to West Bengal Electricity Distribution Company Limited (WBEDCL) for a 10 MW solar power grid. Another decision was taken to introduce a bill in the next Assembly session for offering land rights to the people living in the enclaves of Cooch Behar district.
