Opposition alleges “BJP” written below party symbol can be seen on EVMs, moves EC

The Opposition on Saturday complained to the Election Commission that the Bharatiya Janata Party’s name is appearing under its symbol – the lotus – in electronic voting machines. The EC was asked to take necessary action.

A delegation of leaders including the Congress’ Abhishek Manu Singhvi, Dinesh Trivedi and Derek O’Brien from the Trinamool Congress called on Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora and told him that either the BJP’s name should be removed, or names of other political parties contesting should be added.

“No party can use the symbol and name together,” said Singhvi. The Trinamool Congress has alleged that the lotus symbol has broken lines below its stem and had been smudged in such a manner that the “BJP” could be easily read.

However, NDTV quoted a senior EC official who said that it was not BJP written below the lotus, but the outline of their symbol. Apparently, the BJP had approached the EC requesting them in 2013 to make the outside of the lotus bolder. The report also quoted EC sources saying the EVMs will not be changed.
