Sovon Chatterjee, former Mayor of Kolkata who was once one of the closest aides of Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, visited her house on the occasion of bhai phonta.
This has led to huge speculations that Chatterjee, who had distanced himself from the Trinamool chief and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in August this year, may re-join the Trinamool Congress. On Tuesday, Chatterjee went to the West Bengal CM’s house at 2pm along with his friend Baishakhi Banerjee. One of the reasons that Chatterjee’s relations with Mamata Banerjee had become strained was owing to his association with Baishakhi. Following this, the former Mayor had distanced himself from the senior party leadership, including the party chief, and eventually resigned from the posts of Mayor and minister.
In the last Lok Sabha polls, even as he was part of the Trinamool Congress, he hadn’t been active at all. Then, in August, he joined the BJP along with Baishakhi Banerjee.

However, Sovon Chatterjee’s association with the BJP — for the brief time he has been with the party — hasn’t been quite exciting as he had perhaps hoped for. There were unkind comments on him and Baishakhi Banerjee and they do not appear to be having great camaraderie with the BJP’s top leaders. Interestingly, Baishakhi Chatterjee had met senior leader Partha Chatterjee at his residence last week.
Under this backdrop, his meeting with Mamata Banerjee today seems all the more significant, and already there are speculations that this may lead to his joining the Trinamool Congress (the party he has been associated with since its inception) all over again.
