Specimens have been sent to the Superintendents of Central Correctional Homes by health department for preparing the masks. The inmates who are experts in tailoring work have been selected for the job.
The newly arrived inmates are being kept in separate wards for at least three days to screen them for any symptoms of COVID-19.
Isolation wards have been set up in all correctional facilities so that if anyone has cough, cold and fever, they can be quarantined immediately. The prison authorities have been instructed to admit the inmates to nearby state-run hospitals if the symptoms continue. In case the presence of COVID-19 is confirmed in any inmate, he would be admitted to Kolkata’s Beliaghta Infectious Diseases (ID) Hospital.
The inmates are also being provided hand sanitizers before entering the prison. The security personnel who are often in close contact with the inmates are also being made to clean their hands with sanitizers at regular intervals. The quota of bathing soap has been doubled for the inmates for now.
Awareness programs are also being held through the internal radio stations of some correctional homes to prevent panic among the inmates around COVID-19.
