COVID-19: Containment zones in Kolkata reach 334 from 312, but not unusual for a metro city, says state govt
The number of containment zones in Kolkata increased to 334 from 312 on Wednesday. West Bengal home secretary Alapan Bandopadhyay had said at a press conference on Tuesday that Kolkata is not the only metro city in India where the number of Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) cases is more. All the metros across India have significantly higher number of cases than their rural counterparts because of high population density, he said. Till Monday, Kolkata had reported more than half of COVID-19 cases in the state.
Bandopadhyay assured that the government is carrying out contact tracing of COVID-19 patients with “maximum vigil.”
On Wednesday, he said the state government has applied for 12 more testing laboratories to be approved for Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) testing.
Of the 12 labs, 10 are in state-run hospitals and two in private hospitals. The state currently has 15 labs for COVID-19 testing, he said.
So far, 33,141 samples have been tested in Bengal for COVID-19 with 2,570 of them being tested in last 24 hours. The number of COVID-19 cases in Bengal currently stands at 1,456 with 112 cases reported in last 24 hours. The number of active COVID-19 cases at present is 1,047. One person was discharged yesterday taking the number of total discharged persons in the state to 265.
There have been four deaths from COVID-19 in last 24 hours. Till date, 72 have died in Bengal from COVID-19 while 72 have died from co-morbidities, Bandyopadhyay said.
Elaborating on the preparedness of Bengal to fight COVID-19, Bandyopadhyay said that there are 8,036 beds and 271 ventilators across 67 COVID-19 hospitals in the state. Ventilators were needed in only 30 cases so far, he said.
Those who are trying to return to Bengal by arranging small vehicles on their own, will be able to do so by furnishing relevant particulars in the Entry App provided on the government website of Egiye Bangla. One more app will be uploaded on the website for pilgrims stranded in other states.
