Babu, a chimpanzee in Kolkata’s Alipore Zoo, has bitten the director of the zoo when he tried to feed him on Wednesday.
The director, Asis Kumar Samanta, said that the cut was just a minor one in his finger and was nothing to worry about. He has taken necessary medications along with an injection following the injury, he said.
The director said that he is in habit of feeding the primates in the zoo and that he has been bitten by a monkey on earlier occasions. Samanta said that such injuries are only a part of the life in a zoo and that other zookeepers also have to take injections every now and then, adding that it is “totally normal”.
Visitors, however are not allowed to feed animals. There are notices placed before every animal enclosure forbidding visitors to feed or irritate animals. Violating the order can result in six months’ imprisonment and/or a fine of Rs. 2000.
