Anuj Sharma, Gyanwant Singh to be transferred; who will be the new Kolkata CP, state ADG-law and order?
An IPS officer of ADG rank not involved in controversy will be chosen; order in a day or two.
Kolkata police commissioner Anuj Sharma will be transferred to a new position before the announcement of the West Bengal Assembly elections, sources said.
The Mamata Banerjee government feels that the state would prefer to transfer some officers as there is a general feeling that the Election Commission is likely to transfer some officers ahead of the Assembly elections as soon as the dates are announced and the model code of conduct comes into effect.
Elections for West Bengal – scheduled in April-May 2021 – may be announced in the coming week. And therefore, the Kolkata CP Anuj Sharma and ADG law and order Gyanwant Singh are to be transferred by the state government in a day or two. Sharma took over as the Kolkata CP prior to the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, but he was transferred by the EC. Dr Rajesh Kumar was made CP in his place. Therefore, the government feels that Sharma may be transferred this time before the elections by the EC as well. And therefore the decision to transfer him before there is any such opportunity for the EC to do the same. Sources confirmed that Sharma’s transfer order may be issued in a day or two.
Who will be the new CP in his place? Sources said that one of two IPS officers of the ADG rank will be chosen as the next CP, and the person would have worked in Kolkata Police before. More important, an officer not involved in any controversy will be chosen.
ADG law and order Gyanwant Singh too had been transferred prior to the Lok Sabha polls by the EC. His transfer order too will be issued soon. In addition, officers who have been in the same position for three or more years would also be transferred, as per rules.
