Kolkata Police bans waste burning

The Kolkata Police authorities have imposed a ban on burning waste within the city limits.

The order came into effect on July 3 and will be in vogue till August 31, and is expected to be extended further after that. Kolkata Police had imposed the ban from January 1, 2019 to February 27, following an unprecedented rise in pollution in the city. The National Green Tribunal empowers the police to slap a fine of Rs 5,000 to Rs 25,000 for those found to be flouting the ban.

Items that cannot be burned include garbage, plastic, wood, biomass, organic waste, tyre, tube lights, expired medicine, used batteries, broken mercury thermometers, used needles and syringes, used gauze, batteries, pesticide cans, sanitary napkins, diapers and so on.

The air quality in Kolkata is among the worst in the country with the situation worst in November to January and February.
