Arts faculty students’ union room at Jadavpur University: major repairs required following attack

The Arts faculty students’ union room at Jadavpur University has to undergo major repairs, as some people – alleged to be members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) – barged in and went on a rampage inside last Friday. Apparently, they were protesting the gherao of union minister of state Babul Supriyo, inside the university premises.

They destroyed furniture, laptops, ceiling fans, and wrote “ABVP” with red paint on the walls outside and inside the union room. While the walls have been whitewashed earlier, major repairs are required for the room to be made fit for use.

Broken furniture, torn posters and banners indicate the severity of the destruction. The ceiling of the room has been heavily damaged with roof tiles completely or partially broken. The blades of the ceiling fans have been bent and are beyond repair. Signs of violent hooliganism are evident throughout the room.

It will take some more days for the union room repairs to be completed, students indicated.
