Thirty-five persons have complained to the Kolkata Police authorities of Rs 7 lakh stolen from their accounts without their knowledge. All the residents are from Kolkata’s Jadavpur area.

Police suspect that the fraudsters used skimmers to steal the money. A skimmer is a card reading device that can be attached to an ATM where it collects the card number and PIN numbers of the cards. The device cannot be caught easily be naked eyes as it looks like a part of the ATM machine itself. But on inspection, after the incident happened, police couldn’t find any such devices in any of the ATMs.

Therefore, this is indicative of the fact that the data was stolen some time back. Police suspect that the skimmers were fitted in two ATMs of a nationalized bank in Jadavpur. Neither of those two ATMs allegedly had any guards.

Police have found out that the money was withdrawn from two ATMs in Delhi’s Hauz Khas area. A team of the Kolkata Police have already left for Delhi to check the CCTV footage of the ATMs from which money was withdrawn. There was a similar case last year in which a Romanian gang was involved. Around 50 people had fallen victim to last year’s fraud.
