Babul Supriyo joins Trinamool Congress
He is a sitting MP of the BJP and former union minister of the Narendra Modi govt.
Former Union minister, Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Babul Supriyo today joined Trinamool Congress in presence of the party’s national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee. While Supriyo is no longer a Union minister, he remains a member of Parliament. He said that when he returns to Delhi two days later, he will send his resignation to the Speaker.
The Trinamool Congress tweeted pictures of Supriyo joining their party and wrote: “Today, in the presence of National General Secretary @abhishekaitc and RS MP @derekobrienmp, former Union Minister and sitting MP @SuPriyoBabul joined the Trinamool family. We take this opportunity to extend a very warm welcome to him!”
Recently, Babul Supriyo’s name figured in a list of 20 star campaigners of the BJP for the byelections in Bengal that includes Bhawanipore where Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee is contesting. Supriyo had then clarified that his name was included in the list without consulting him. He took to Twitter earlier after he was dropped from the list of Union ministers in the Narendra Modi-led government at the Centre, expressing his anguish. He also expressed his wish to quit politics then. Later, after intervention of the senior BJP leaders, he decided to stay on as MP.
On Saturday, after joining Trinamool, he said that he had recently moved to Kolkata from Delhi and the opportunity of joining the Trinamool came after the decision. “I want to serve the people of Bengal and will do what the party asks me to do,” he said. “I took the decision to join Trinamool Congress, over the last four days,” he said.
