Bengal Assembly Speaker summons CBI, ED officers

The officers have been summoned on September 22.

West Bengal Speaker Biman Banerjee has said that he has summoned senior officers of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to explain why no permission had been taken from the Speaker’s office before submitting chargesheets against state legislators recently. Letters have been sent to the city offices of the two central agencies. They have been summoned to the Speaker’s office on September 22.

Several Bengal MLAs from the ruling Trinamool Congress, including ministers, have been chargesheeted and summoned recently by the two Central probe agencies for their alleged involvement in ponzi scams and the Narada sting operations case.

“I have asked the ED and CBI officers to come to the Assembly on September 22 and give an explanation as to why the Speaker’s office was not given prior information and why action was taken without seeking my permission,” Banerjee said.

Trinamool leaders like Sukhendu Sekhar Roy and Kunal Ghosh have maintained that the investigating agencies always inform the Speaker of the Lok Sabha for action against MPs but the same is not followed for MLAs in Bengal.
