Bengal civic polls: DMs to map sensitive areas, no decision on ballot or EVM

West Bengal State Election Commissioner Sourav Das on Wednesday asked all the district magistrates (DM) to complete the preparations related to civic polls, indicating that the polls are likely to be held in April.
It was however not decided whether the polls would be conducted in ballot papers or electronic voting machines (EVM). The Commission will shortly hold a meeting with the district superintendents of police to discuss the law and order matters.
The State Election Commission (SEC) is especially careful this time to prevent incidents of violence related to the polls.
It was also said at the meeting that the model code of conduct would be applicable only in those wards which are under the municipalities holding the polls. The DMs were asked to map the sensitive areas which are vulnerable and prone to tension and violence.
The DMs were asked to ensure all arrangements including the electricity and sanitation facilities in every booth had been taken care of.
A joint forum of teachers and education workers in the state submitted a deputation to the SEC on Wednesday demanding assurance of protection in the coming polls. They were concerned about their safety as many teachers and education workers are appointed as polling officials in the elections.
