The West Bengal government is planning to organise a grand felicitation for Abhijit Vinayak Banerjee, who won this year’s Nobel Prize for Economics along with Esther Duflo and Michael Kremer.
Senior minister in the Mamata Banerjee government Partha Chatterjee said that the government was planning a felicitation for Banerjee. The date of the felicitation programme is yet to be finalised.
Banerjee, Duflo and Kremer won the Nobel “for their experimental approach to alleviating global poverty”.
Chief minister Mamata Banerjee called up Abhijit Vinayak Banerjee’s mother Nirmala Banerjee and expressed her desire to pay a visit. The Governor, Jagdeep Dhankar also called her and said that he would visit when Abhijit Banerjee is here.
Earlier, the CM took to Twitter to congratulate Banerjee: “Hearty congratulations to Abhijit Banerjee, an alumnus of South Point School & Presidency College Kolkata, for winning the Nobel Prize in Economics. Another Bengali has done the nation proud. We are overjoyed.”
