Bengal govt. agency to reach fish at your doorstep in Kolkata through mobile vendors during lockdown
West Bengal State Fisheries Development Corporation (SFDC) has come up with a mobile phone application through which people can now order fish from their homes.
The step has been taken to address the shortage of fish in local markets due to the 21 days’ county-wide lockdown which started from March 24 to contain the spread of Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19).
West Bengal is primarily dependent on other states like Andhra Pradesh for its supply of fish. But the lockdown has made it impossible for the trucks carrying fish and other commodities from other states to enter Bengal. The limited supply of fish is not enough to meet the demand.
The SFDC has thus decided to sell fish in various places of Kolkata and its outskirts through mobile vendors. It will also sell fish in various markets of the city.
Fish was being sold by SFDC since Saturday at Salt Lake, Jodhpur Park, Jadavpur, Tollygunge, Ballygunge, Kalighat, Shymabazar and New Town among other places in the city. Currently, 20 vending vans have been deployed which will sell fish to the city households.
The SFDC is selling fish in some other districts like Burdwan, Bolpur and East Midnapore as well.
State Minister for fisheries Chandra Nath Sinha said that such an initiative was needed at a time like this when people are being repeatedly asked by government to not step out of their houses to check the spread of COVID-19.
