Bengal polls: 5 killed in Cooch Behar’s Sitalkuchi, 4 of them in Central forces’ firing

Five persons were killed in Cooch Behar’s Sitalkuchi on Saturday in poll violence during the fourth phase of Bengal elections on Saturday. Elections are under way in 44 constituencies in five districts of West Bengal in the fourth phase of elections.

The five persons died in two separate incidents. The Election Commission authorities said that four persons died in Central armed police force (CAPF) firing. The incident took place outside booth number 126 of Mathabhanga block I of Sitalkuchi constituency. Trinamool Congress leaders said that they were the party’s workers. “The BJP was not allowing people to vote and the CRPF was influencing voters to vote in favour of the BJP. There was a scuffle between the party workers of the BJP and the Trinamool Congress when CAPF targeted Trinamool workers and opened fire. Several others were left injured in the incident. CAPF authorities were not available to comment on the incident.

Earlier in the day, in another incident, a first-time voter, aged 18 years, was shot dead outside another polling booth in Sitalkuchi of Cooch Behar. The young man who was killed was reportedly a BJP supporter, and the party alleged that the attack came from Trinamool Congress.
