BJP, brace yourselves for May 2: says Abhishek Banerjee with this picture of Mamata Banerjee
The Trinamool Congress chief was severely injured in Nandigram yesterday evening.
West Bengal chief minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee was seen in a picture with her left leg cast – a photograph tweeted by her party MP and nephew Abhishek Banerjee. He took to Twitter and shared the picture with the words: “@BJP4Bengal Brace yourselves to see the power of people of BENGAL on Sunday, May 2nd. Get ready”.
Elections are scheduled in eight phases in Bengal starting March 27 and continuing till April 29. Results will be out on May 2.
Mamata Banerjee was injured in Nandigram on Wednesday evening after she had filed her nomination in Haldia a few hours ago. She was rushed to Kolkata and admitted to the state-run SSKM Hospital, where she has been admitted after a number of tests.
Abhishek Banerjee’s message was targeted the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), whose leaders have said that Mamata Banerjee was taking to histrionics and it was a ploy to get sympathy.
Doctors meanwhile said that she has injuries on her foot, shoulder and neck and has been given painkillers. “Initial examination suggests severe bony injuries in her left ankle, foot and bruises, injuries in right shoulder, forearm and neck. The Chief Minister complained of chest pain, breathlessness since the incident. She is kept under close watch for 48 hours,” M Bandopadhya, a doctor, was quoted by news agency ANI.
Mamata Banerjee, 66, said last evening that she was pushed by four or five people against her car and had the door shut on her. This happened while she was interacting with people in a busy market area while she was returning to the house her party has rented for her stay in Nandigram. She said there were no police personnel around her then. While she had planned to spend the night in Nandigram, she was rushed to Kolkata later in the evening when her foot swelled up.
The Assembly elections in Bengal is an intense battle this time between the ruling Trinamool Congress and the BJP that gained ground in the state during the last Lok Sabha polls. Nandigram is somewhat of an epicentre of that battle as the CM has chosen the seat to fight as a candidate herself. Her opposition in Nandigram is her long-time aide Suvendu Adhikary, who has now joined the BJP.
The incident took place a day after the Election Commission of India (ECI) replaced the state’s director general of police (DGP) Virendra, with P Nirajnayan. The EC has asked the state government to submit a report on the incident.
