JP Nadda, the working president of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), will lead a rally in Kolkata on December 23 “congratulating the Centre” for clearing the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
The rally will start from Rani Rashmoni Road at Dharmatala where Nadda will address a gathering and it will end at Hedua, close to the house of Swami Vivekananda.
Nadda, a national leader of the BJP is visiting Bengal to lead the rally first time since the CAA was passed in both houses of the Parliament.
The march is being seen as BJP’s attempt to counter the ongoing protests against CAA and National Register of Citizens (NRC) by West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee which has seen the spontaneous participation of thousands of people over the past few days. There have also been protest marches from apolitical organisations and ordinary citizens without any backing of any organisation. The BJP is desperate to show that a section of people are “supporting” the CAA and NRC.
The CAA, which seeks to provide citizenship to non-Muslim refugees from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh has seen massive protests across the country. Some protests have turned violent and in some, police have resorted to using oppressive measures.
Various political parties, civil organizations, students of various universities, common people and eminent personalities have taken to the streets in the last few days for voicing their protests against CAA and NRC.
