BJP & Trinamool spar before poll body as Mamata Banerjee alleges attack
Both parties have sought investigation to bring out the truth.
A day after Trinamool Congress chief and West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee alleged she was attacked in Nandigram which left her seriously injured in the leg and neck, Bengal’s ruling party Trinamool Congress and the Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lodged complaints with the Election Commission demanding thorough probe into the matter.
Trinamool Congress, in a letter to the chief electoral officer, wrote that “the attack is a deep rooted conspiracy to take the life of our Chairperson. We call for immediate investigation into the same”. The party said that the attack on Banerjee took place within 24 hours of the removal of erstwhile DGP Virendra, and added that after the announcement of elections, law and order comes under the purview of the EC. “The ECI is squarely responsible to protect the Hon’ble CM,” the letter said. It also mentioned that the state’s ADG law and order Jawed Shamim was also transferred right after announcement of the elections.
The party also alleged about a “nexus” between the BJP’s complaints against the erstwhile DGP, the EC removing the DGP and the SP, district police (who report to the DGP) being absent during the time of attack on Banerjee.
The BJP meanwhile, accusing Mamata Banerjee of lying about the attack, called for video footage to lay bare the “facts”. The BJP leaders have openly criticised and doubted that Banerjee was injured at all, and have now sought for a detailed inquiry into the incident.
The party said in a letter to the poll body that it was “shocked” to see that Mamata Banerjee had been injured and she had alleged that she was pushed by some people. “This is a very serious allegation involving the security of the Chief Minister,” said the party, and questioned how it could happen in the presence of top security officials.
