Bowbazar house-collapse: Metro Railway authorities start demolition of damaged buildings

Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation (KMRC) has started demolition work of five buildings in Bowbazar which were damaged beyond repair.

KMRC started the work with permission from Kolkata Municipal Corporation authorities and from the owners of the respective houses. The demolition work is being done based on the advice of a team of national and international experts.

Since last Saturday, 52 houses in the Bowbazar area were damaged following the boring of tunnel for the East-West Metro. Many more houses were partially or entirely damaged since then, leaving scores of families homeless. KMRC has started distributing compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the families already.

In the first phase of demolition, five completely damaged buildings on Durga Pithuri Lane are being demolished. Later, damaged buildings in the Shakrapara Lane would be taken up, mostly for partial demolition.
