Environmental activist Subhas Dutta, whose petition to protect the lakes had led to the NGT ban, said that he would move court on Friday, to file a contempt petition. Environmentalists have called for keeping the Sarovar out of the list of puja venues in order to protect the flora and fauna.

The NGT had imposed the ban two years ago and had allowed the festival to be conducted for two years, provided it would no longer be used as a venue from 2018.

But thousands of devotees went to the Rabindra Sarovar and performed the puja flouting the ban. Crackers were burst, flowers were dropped into the water as part of puja offering. Police and the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) did little to stop the devotees from entering the premises and offering puja and littering the place.
