Cricketers Manoj Tiwari, Ashok Dinda in politics; Tiwari to join Trinamool Congress, will be candidate

Candidate lists of political parties are full of surprises this time.

Cricketer Manoj Tiwari is expected to join Trinamool Congress at party chief Mamata Banerjee’s meeting in Hooghly district.

Tiwari plays for Bengal in domestic cricket and has played for the national team, Kolkata Knight Riders, Kings XI Punjab and Rising Pune Supergiants in the IPL. He was also party of the 2012 T20 World Cup squad of India. Manoj Tiwari, a resident of Howrah, may be fielded a candidate from the district, from where Laxmi Ratan Shukla, who was part of the Trinamool Congress and minister in Mamata Banerjee’s cabinet, recently stepped down, saying he would like to move away from politics.

Tiwari has been particularly active on social media in recent times and had made several political comments, which were also indicative of his possible entry into politics.

According to sources, chief minister Mamata Banerjee had herself invited Manoj Tiwari to join her party. Sources say that he wanted some time to think over it and now he has decided to join the Trinamool Congress.

Another cricketer entering politics is former national cricketer Ashoke Dinda. Apart from being party of the national squad, he has also played for the Bengal team, Kolkata Knight Riders, Rising Pune Supergiant, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Delhi Daredevils, Pune Warriors India and for Goa in the Ranji Tropy. He recently retired from all forms of cricket. Dinda hails from Moyna in East Midnapore.
