ED summons Trinamool leader Abhishek Banerjee & wife Rujira in coal smuggling case
Two senior IPS officers from Bengal have also been summoned.
Trinamool Congress national general secretary and Member of Parliament Abhishek Banerjee and his wife Rujira Banerjee have been summoned by the Central government’s Enforcement Directorate in an alleged money laundering case involving coal smuggling.
Abhishek Banerjee is the nephew of Trinamool chief and West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee. The Diamond Harbour MP has been asked to appear before the agency’s New Delhi office on September 6 and his wife has been asked to appear before them before that – on September 1. Their lawyer, Sanjay Basu, has also been asked to appear before the agency, on September 3. Also, two senior IPS officers from West Bengal – Gyanwant Singh and Shyam Singh – have been summoned by the ED in the same case on September 8 and 9.
The ED had initiated money laundering investigations into alleged theft in government coalfields in West Bengal. The CBI had earlier questioned Rujira Banerjee in connection with this case on February 23, ahead of the assembly elections in Bengal.
